Serbia's President Aleksandar Vucic reiterated on Tuesday his country wanted the European Union membership, but that it would build good relationships with other countries, the FoNet news agency reported.

Speaking to reporters in Brussels after meeting the European Union President Jean-Claude Juncker, Vucic said Serbia was a sovereign state, and it would act like one.

„We will be on the European road, but no one knows what will go on inside the EU,“ Vucic said and recalled he told Albania’s and North Macedonia’s prime ministers ahead of the European Council (EUCO) meeting what was going to happen and advised them to cooperate regardless of what Brussels would decide.

The EUCO failed to set a date for the opening of accession negotiations with Skopje and Tirana due to the French opposition.

Serbia’s President said that Juncker and the EU Commissioner for Enlargement Johannes Hahn always had a great deal of respect for Serbia.

Vucic said that no big enthusiasm and high energy should be expected regarding the EU and European integrations, but a rational approach instead.

Asked about the French proposal on a partnership with the EU instead of full membership, Vucic said he had several hours of talks with President Emmanuel Macron during his recent visit to Belgrade.

„I believe Macron wishes the best for Serbia, that he loves Serbia and I’m convinced he would try to find what’s the best for our country,“ Vucic added.
