The 'Don't Let Belgrade Drown' initiative staged a protest outside the City's Assembly building and presented the authorities with a petition for concrete measures against the air pollution in Serbia, N1 reported on Thursday.

Radomir Lazovic, of the 'Don't Let Belgrade Drown', said people could feel what they breath when outside.

"We have created an application that measures damaging material. Belgrade tops the list of polluted cities, but the capital is not only one. There are other places like Valjevo, Nis... No one deals with the problem. The authorities are convincing us that when rain and wind start, pollution will be solved, Lazovic said.

He added the country needed both short and long-time measures.

"The short-term measures can protect us for a while if the pollution is extreme. The long-time measures mean the improvement of public transport, control of the industrial polluters, turning to renewables, aforestation," Lazovic added.
