The title Lie of The Year 2019 went to a statement by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic who said that “today the salaries of nurses are between 50,446 and 54,774 Dinars” on the TV Prva morning show on February 21, the Istinomer false news watchdog portal said on Friday.

The portal said that “pay rolls which the City Health Care Union handed to Istinomer showed that Vucic voiced incorrect information”.

Second place went to Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) official Vladimir Djukanovic MP who said that “under (Belgrade Mayor Dragan) Djilas (then city-owned TV) Studio B never invited anyone from the SNS” while third place when to SNS MP group chief Aleksandar Martinovic for his statement that “at least 35 of the same names were on a list of signatories” in support of a petition.

Istinomer evaluated 73 statement by public officials in 2019, 40 of which were deemed untrue and 23 partly untrue.

The most frequent topics addressed by political officials in those statement were the economy, opposition and anti-government protects.

The officials whose statements were checked for falsehoods include President Aleksandar Vucic, Construction Minister Zorana Mihajlovic, Deputy Belgrade Mayor Goran Vesic and Prime Minister Ana Brnabic.
