The Red Star Belgrade basketball team did not leave for Podgorica on Monday to plan an ABA League game against the Montenegrin club Buducnost because of security risks, club President Nebojsa Covic told a news conference.
The Red Star team boarded a plane for Podgorica but the club management decided that they should not go to Montenegro and they disembarked. Covic cited security risks as the reason, saying that Montenegrin security forces warned in their situation assessment report that incidents could not be ruled out.
Montenegro has been the site of protests and clashes with police over the past few days because of the newly-adopted law on religious communities which critics say will lead to the government seizing Serbian Orthodox Church properties, including monasteries, in Montenegro.
The Red Star-Buducnost match was scheduled to start at 06:00 pm on Monday at the Moraca sports hall in the Montenegrin capital. The Belgrade club was scheduled to leave on Monday morning.
