Serbian lawyers warning over officials’ statements

The press release comes in reaction to a senior Justice Ministry officials statement that the judiciary and prosecution have become irresponsible and look out only for themselves.  

“Consistent respect for the division of power principle as the foundation of a modern state and the establishing of valid mechanisms to secure their mutual balance are the conditions needed to achieve a functional state of law,” the AKS press release said.

It called all public officials to show more responsibility towards, society and refrain from voicing evaluations about the judiciary and recalled that decisions on evidence collected by the police can only be taken by courts in line with the law.

The AKS added that judges and prosecutors should invest more effort in securing their independence. “Lawyers will always support efforts to strengthen the state of law as the only way to achieve the interests of its citizens,” the press release said.
