Parliament Speaker Maja Gojkovic told her counterparts from the Western Balkans and the European Parliament in Brussels on Tuesday that the lowering of the vote threshold from the current five to three percent is a strong impulse to the European value of pluralism.

She added that the lower threshold would improve representation in parliament and allow a wider spectrum of political ideas and views, the Serbian parliament said in a press release.

“This is an important liberalization of the rules which contributes to developing political life within institutions and is an important investment in the future of democracy,” Gojkovic is quoted as saying.

She said that a clear European perspective is of fundamental importance to the region, adding that the European Union has to reaffirm itself as a community of values through the expansion process and the strengthening of democratic institutions.

Gojkovic said that Serbia expects the EU Council, the EU-Western Balkans summit in Zagreb and the conference on the future of the EU to take a positive step forward. She said that it is especially important that the step forward is reflected in the new EU budget cycle 2021-27. She said that it’s important to define a time frame and clear methodology for future negotiations to improve their quality and remove any uncertainty.
