Wreaths laid to mark WW2 anniversary

The Serbian military and Belgrade city authorities laid wreaths on Monday at the monument to pilots who defended the capital against Nazi air assaults in April 1941.

Defense Minister Aleksandar Vulin said that on April 6, 1941, “the Serbs were the only anti-Fascist nation in Europe” and paid “a terrible price” for that.

The wreath laying ceremony was attended by a delegation of the Serbian Air Force, the Labor and Veterans’ Affairs Ministry and the city of Belgrade.

The Kingdom of Yugoslavia was pulled into World War 2 when the Luftwaffe launched massive bombing raids on Belgrade on April 6, 1941, causing huge civilian casualties and destroying a large part of the city.

The Belgrade city authorities decided to light up bridges, parliament and other buildings and landmarks in the colors of the Serbian flag.
