Cable car endangers Belgrade Fortress, Europa Nostra says

"The authenticity and integrity of this impressive fortress - which is on the UNESCO's Tentative List as one of the most significant pan-European nominations for the world heritage as the Roman Empire Borders – is endangered by the damaging cable car project," the organisation said in a statement.

Belgrade Deputy Mayor Goran Vesic said last November that the city budget for 2020 allocated 3.6 million Euro for building the gondola. The cable car should link parts of the city on two banks of the Sava river – the Belgrade Fortress to the Confluence Park.

The other monuments on the list are situated in Albania, Czech Republic, Italy, Norway, Poland and Slovenia.

"The '7 most Endangered' identifies the most threatened monuments, sites and landscapes in Europe and mobilises public and private partners at all levels to find a viable future for these heritage gems, Europa Nostra says on its website."

Its experts, together with The European Investment Bank (EIB) people will tour all seven locations and meet all key interested parties.

"The teams of different experts will offer advises, identify possible finances and aid in mobilising broad support for preserving these localities. Besides, they will suggest some recommendation for further actions," the statement said.

"All this cultural heritage tells the European story as a part of the common culture and history. The European movement dedicated to preserving heritage sends an important message of solidarity with local communities, people and activists by putting them on this list," Dr Hermann Parzinger, the Europa Nostra Executive Director, said.

The Dean of the EIB Institute Francisco de Paula said that the list of endangered localities had a crucial role in preserving the most valuable European elements – cultural diversity and heritage.
