Day seven: More anti-regime, less pro-regime noise in Serbia

The ‘Don’t Drown Belgarde Initiative’ and ‘Civil Front’ called on people last Sunday to protest against the measures during the coronavirus epidemic and the authorities’ decision.

People responded for the seventh night in a row, at 8:05, five minutes after already traditional applause for the country’s medical staff.

According to posts on social media, in the northern city of Novi Sad and some other places, the noise was louder than before.

 In several parts of Belgrade, the pro-regime groups said to be organised by the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) headed by President Aleksandar Vucic, lit torches and played music from the rooftops, booing Dragan Djilas, an opposition leader, regularly targeted by the authorities, tabloids and other media under the authorities’ control.

 In the southern city of Nis, an hour ahead of the 6 pm curfew, a group of people protested in the central street against young men who lit torches and played music from loudspeakers brought onto the buildings’ rooftops in support of the regime during the ban on movements.

SNS denied it was behind that and attributed the information to hostile media. They said their activists were delivering aid to those in need.

On Saturday, as local reporters said, there were no such counter-protests.

There were also pro-regime groups yelling insults to Djilas, but without torches and fireworks used during the last two nights.
