A leading Serbian epidemiologist told the Nova.rs portal that the elderly will have to decide on their own about the risks of leaving their homes once the state of emergency is lifted.

Dr Predrag Kon said that the pandemic Crisis Staff is recommending that everyone over the age of 65 should not leave their homes unless absolutely necessary.

The state of emergency was declared by President Aleksandar Vucic on March 15 as part of efforts to combat the coronavirus pandemic. The state of emergency is set to be lifted later this week. “People over the age of 65 have no reason not to move around if they follow all recommendations. Everyone will have to personally assess the risk of going out and prepare accordingly,” Kon said.

He said that face masks will be mandatory in city transport and are recommended in all closed spaces, adding that the two-meter social distancing measure remains in force.

According to Kon, the 14 day quarantine when entering Serbia remains in force but with changes possible in line with international agreements and measures. “Business people will most probably not have to be in self-isolation but they will have to prove their health with negative coronavirus tests not older than 72 hours,” he said.
