Montenegrin bishop, priests released after 72-hour detention
Montenegrin bishop Joanikije and eight priests of Montenegro and the Littoral Metropolitanate were released Saturday morning after 72-hour long detention over a liturgy that was organised despite the gathering ban in that country, Montenegrin media reported.
The bishop and the priests were detained after organising a liturgy on May 12, on the St. Vasil Day, in the western town Niksic, which was attended by several thousands of believers, despite the gathering ban.
“Your support means the continuation of our battle for our sanctuary. We have had a small disagreement with the authorities. They realised how much St. Vasil means for this town,” Joanikije said as the crowd was shouting: “We want liturgies.”
The bishop said it was necessary to be careful because of the virus but that St. Vasil saved the people and Montenegro.
