The opposition Dveri Movement sent a letter to European Union institutions urging them to take a stand on the state of democracy and the media in Serbia, saying that the situation has never been worse.
“Today we address the European Union and call on the EU partners who are committed to freedom and justice, to express their position on what is happening in Serbia,” the letter said.
It recalled that Dveri leader Bosko Obradovic MP and a fellow MP Ivan Kostic have been on hunger strike in front of the Serbian parliament for days while their demands have been ignored by the government, state TV (RTS) and the Constitutional and Administrative Courts.
“This has exhausted all attempts to appeal to the national authorities and institutions,” it said and added that “the state of democracy and media freedom has never been worse”.
Dveri accused Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic of “unconstitutionally concentrating all power in his hands, usurping the media, stifling the voice of the opposition in Parliament and taking over all democratic institutions”.
The letter said that “fake and undemocratic” parliamentary and local elections on June 21 would bring harmful government decisions, adding that a boycott and postponement of the vote is the only way to reduce tension and normalize the political situation in Serbia.
