Serbian Culture Minister Vladan Vukosavljevic has sent a letter to UNESCO following “illegal works on a road in the protected zone of the Visoki Decani monastery” in Kosovo, a ministry statement said on Friday.
The letter said that the road is being built in protected zone of the monastery which is listed as a world cultural heritage site and is on the World Heritage in Danger list. The minister warned that the 14th century monastery which he said is of immeasurable significance to the heritage of the world is in danger because of the road work.
“The change from a local village road to a major road will cause a drastic increase in traffic and that will further endanger the monastery which is already faced with many problems,” he said.
The ministry statement recalled that the European Union financed the construction of a road north of Decani and said that the construction of the road alongside the monastery is unnecessary and causes damage.
Vukosavljevic called for a reaction from the competent authorities to protect the cultural heritage site in line with international conventions.
