The Serbian Internal Affairs Ministry (MUP) said on Thursday that the police charged 22 people for human trafficking in 2020, rescuing 15 adults and six minors.
The press release issued on World Day against Trafficking in Persons said that 12 of those were female and added that the majority of them were victims of sexual exploitation.
It quoted Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic as saying that the perpetrators should be punished and the victims should be given maximum support to recover, adding that society as a whole has to do everything to prevent people from becoming victims of trafficking.
Stefanovic said that Serbia had improved its institutional capabilities in combating trafficking in cooperation with international partners and the civil sector.
