Serbian deputy Prime Minister Zorana Mihajlovic congratulated fellow Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) official Dragana Sotirovski on her election as Mayor of the southern city of Nis on Thursday even though the election by the city assembly is scheduled for Friday.
A press release from Mihajlovic’s cabinet congratulated Sitorovski “on the appointment to the duties of the Mayor of Nis”. The message wished the “new Mayor of Nis” success and expressed the conviction that her huge experience and dedication would provide better living conditions for the city’s residents. Sotirovski was head of the Nisava administrative district and topped the SNS list of candidates in June. She is also a member of the ruling party’s top body.
Local media reported that the city assembly did not elect the mayor on Thursday but only confirmed the mandates of its members elected on June 21 and elected an SNS official as assembly speaker.
Earlier reports that Sotirovski would take over as mayor of the SNS-controlled city should be confirmed on Friday, the Juzne Vesti news portal reported adding that she received congratulations from councilors who spoke at Thursday’s session.
