Five days ahead of the Belgrade – Pristina leaders meeting at the White House, messages coming from both capitals are contradictory and to a certain extent confusing.

And while all official reports about the topics suggest the talks will focus on the economy and infrastructure, Serbia's President says his sense tells him there might be a surprise. If that happens, he adds, he will reject to meet the US President Donald Trump, who is unofficially reported to may see both Vucic and Kosovo's Prime Minister Avdulah Hoti.

However, the possible meeting, analysts and diplomats agree, may only happen if Belgrade and Pristina agree on something crucially important. That, they say, might make Trump meet the two leaders in a sign of his foreign policy success amid the heated campaign ahead of the November presidential elections in the US.

The European Union, which has been facilitating the Belgrade – Pristina dialogue on the normalisation of relations since 2013, welcomes the US attempt to help in the search for the solution through the talks on the economy.

Still, some sources say Washington is also trying to take over the political issues from Brussels, and that has raised some eyebrows in the EU capital.

According to Hoti, the success of the dialogue could only be the mutual recognition between Kosovo and Serbia, what Belgrade says will never happen.

But Vucic has been refusing to reveal his plans for the dispute, and only says he will do everything to protect the country's interests.

On the other hand, Pristina's plan is clear and straightforward with Hoti claiming the mutual recognition has been the only topic in all the meetings he has had with Serbia's representatives.

"During all meetings which I have taken part in and which we will have with Serbia's representatives, the only issue has been and will be the mutual recognition. Everything that has been talked about aims at reaching an agreement on the mutual recognition, without jeopardising Kosovo's unitary character and territorial integrity," Hoti said late on Saturday.

Reacting to his words, the head of Serbia's Government Office for Kosovo Marko Djuric, he accused Hoti of "deceiving the public."

He told the state RTS TV on Sunday that he had talks with the White House people who confirmed the plan would focus on economic topics.

However, he did not exclude "some surprises, as President Vucic said," but reiterated Serbia would do everything to preserve national interests based on the Constitution and would work on widening the economic cooperation.
