Sem Fabrizi, the head of the European Union Delegation in Serbia, said on Tuesday it was crucial to support the LGBTI community's rights, and not only during the Pride, because the support of their rights also meant carrying about all people's rights.
"The Pride Week and similar events are important because they are sending a message that all people, without a difference, have the same rights and freedoms, including the freedom to rally and freedom of expression," Fabrizi said during his visit to the Belgrade Pride Infor Centre.
This year Pride Week is held online due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Fabrizi said that ten years after the first Pride Week that took place in Belgrade "Serbia made several steps in the right direction" in respecting the LGBTI community's rights, but added, "a lot more should be done."
"The strategy in fighting discrimination is still missing; the attacks on LGBTI people are still happening, sometimes without an appropriate investigation, sometimes without acting at all, what's unacceptable," Fabrizi said.
He talked with the activists about the LGBTI associations in Serbia position and specific needs, primarily about the security, and the work conditions amid the pandemic.
"The EU doesn't finance only political struggle in support of LGBTI's rights, but also implements a project against violence and discrimination of the LGBTI people," Fabrizi said.
