Parts of an aerial bomb left over from the 1999 NATO air campaign were removed from a river bed just outside the grounds of the airport in the southern Serbian city of Nis.
Mihajlo Zdravkovic, CEO of the state-owned Airports of Serbia, confirmed that parts of a cassette bomb were found at a depth of half a meter in the Nisava river by workers installing runway lights. He said they found a casing which did not have a detonator or explosive charge. The parts of the bomb were removed by sappers.
Nis airport was bombed in 1999 and mine clearing teams were brought in after the campaign to remove any leftover munitions. The airport got a safety certificate after the munition-clearing operation was completed on its grounds.
