Belgrade deputy Mayor Goran Vesic failed to show up for a scheduled event in central Belgrade on Friday, preferring to go to a cornerstone ceremony which was attended by President Aleksandar Vucic.
Vesic and the owner of the Voda Voda water bottling company Vojin Djordjevic were scheduled to place a time capsule at the construction site of a fountain at Flower Square (Cvetni Trg) but neither showed up. TV crews and reporters waited with a number of other people for more than 30 minutes before managing to contact someone in city hall after multiple calls to the cabinets of the mayor and deputy mayor. They were told that Vesic went to the ceremony in Batajnica suburb without canceling the previous event.
Vesic was seen standing next to Vucic at the cornerstone ceremony during live coverage of that event on the pro-government TV Pink.
The crowd waiting for the event included three members of the 1 in 5 Million Initiative who brought a bucket of polluted water from a Sava river inlet with a dead fish in it to draw attention to the pollution of the rivers through the Serbian capital.
Police patrols and plainclothes officers secured the area for the scheduled event.
