Pope Francis is preparing to visit Belgrade so that Cardinal Alojzije Spepinac can be proclaimed a saint, Zagreb's Jutarnji list wrote Saturday, Hina reported.

Pope Francis' visit to Belgrade is his long-held wish, due to the Pope's ecumenical policy, especially regarding the establishment of cooperation and ties with the Orthodoxy - and the Serbian Orthodox Church is considered a very strong and influential church alongside the Russian Orthodox Church - in countries where the Catholic community is in the minority.

And as part of this visit, an inevitable issue that has long "oppressed" the Church among Croats, and has already spilt over and became an important national and political issue - the proclamation of Alojzije Stepinac as a saint. This is considered a stumbling block in relations between the two churches, not only in the region but also in the Vatican's relations with the Serbian Orthodox Church.
