Croatia's Documenta civil society organisation, as well as the Montenegrin Centre for Civic Education (CGO) and the Human Rights Action (HRA), said on Sunday that they expected Montenegro's authorities to finally launch court proceedings for war crimes perpetrated in Dubrovnik 29 years ago.
The NGOs said in a press release, issued today on the 29th anniversary of one of the worst days in Dubrovnik's history, when Serbian and Montenegrin soldiers targeted the Croatian town with all types of weapons, killing 19 defenders and civilians and wounding another 60 people, that the court proceedings should be conducted and appropriate rulings handed down so that Montenegro can relieve itself of the burden of the collective responsibility for the atrocities committed in the Dubrovnik area in 1991 and 1992.
It recalls that in 2014, the European Commission's expert Mauricio Salustro also urged Montenegro's authorities to prosecute and punish war crimes in accordance with international standards.
