An anti-lithium mining activist called for an October 16 protest in the western Serbian city of Loznica on Friday.

Speaking to reporters in front of the Serbian Parliament Zlatko Kokanovic of the Ne Damo Jadar (We Won’t Give Up Jadar) called the public to put up road blocks across the country starting on Saturday.

Kokanovic’s news conference comes a day after parliament rejected a draft law proposed by the opposition which would effectively ban the mining of lithium in Serbia. The Rio Tinto company wants to open a lithium mine in western Serbia.

“We are calling the public to come to Loznica on Wednesday the 16th at 5 pm. We have organized a protest. We are calling everyone to set up road blocks in their home towns as of Saturday, first for an hour with the time increasing later depending on whether the demands are met or not,” he said.

He accused thee ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) of capitulating and betraying the country. “We did everything we can through institutions,” he added.
