Activists preventing the demolition of a historic bridge in Belgrade called for an urgent meeting of everyone who supports them, adding that a Hungarian company is being brought in to cut it up.
Bridge Remains Initiative activists have been preventing the demolition of the Old Savski Bridge which was built by the Germans in WW 2. Its destruction was prevented by a school teacher who lived in the neighborhood when the Nazi forces withdrew from what was the capital of Yugoslavia.
The Bridge Remains activists set up a camp and stood guard on both sides of the bridge to prevent heavy machinery from being brought in to tear down the bridge. They claim that the bridge is being removed because of the Belgrade Waterfront, a pet project of the Serbian authorities which is meant to be an elite housing complex on the banks of the Sava river which separates the old and new parts of the city.
“It’s time to find out if we’re capable and care enough to save the bridge. We believe we are a step away from victory which is why we are calling for strong unity and joint resistance to the corruption that is eating up our city, institutions and lives,” a Bridge Remains statement said. It added that metal sections of the bridge are being removed by workers from as yet unidentified companies. The statement cited what it claims is insider information that a Hungarian company is coming to cut up the bridge because no Serbian company is licensed for that work.
