The Bridge Stays initiative reported Tuesday morning that they prevented another attempt to demolish the Old Sava Bridge in Belgrade.

The group urged citizens to remain alert and respond to their call if workers return.

In a press release, the initiative said that workers, lacking both work orders and city service identification, attempted to remove electrical installations on the bridge using an excavator before being stopped by activists.

“We urge all citizens to stay alert and respond to our call for field defense of the bridge, as we expect their return and another attempt at illegal demolition. The authorities do not have a project for a new bridge, nor a legal permit for demolition, but they do have a police cordon guarding the illegal work in the middle of the bridge at all times,” the press release said.

Citizens and activists from The Bridge Stays initiative have been guarding the bridge to prevent its demolition. The Old Sava Bridge, built in 1942 during Nazi occupation, served as a vital connection between Belgrade’s new and old sections, carrying city buses, trams, and cars. While the city government, backed by Serbian authorities, seeks to remove the bridge, opposition officials and democracy activists claim the main motivation is to accommodate the Belgrade Waterfront complex, a project favored by authorities.
