Aleksic: Many ruling party supporters are now against lithium mining

The fight against lithium and against turning Serbia into a mining colony is a fight for all citizens, because the mine in the Jadar valley will only open the door for mining across Serbia, said People's Movement of Serbia (NPS) leader Miroslav Aleksic.

The NPS quoted Aleksic as telling Nova S TV that “there is a large number of people who supported this government, yet who are now against lithium and who are ready to stand up, at protests and blockades, against those they voted for in the past.”
“I expect a Serbian Parliament session by the end of the month, where the agenda will include a proposal to amend the Law on Mining and Geological Exploration, in order to change a clause that bans the exploitation of lithium, as well as applied research into lithium and boron,” said Aleksic, who is also an MP.
He stressed that “one million hectares of arable agricultural land remain uncultivated,” and that “lithium would bring in about 150 to 200 million, which is less than the annual production and export of raspberries.”
