Serbia’s Commissioner for the Protection of Equality Brankica Jankovic said that, in the times of great challenges and growing extremism, the issue of protecting the equality of all citizens becomes even more important, and that it is clearer than ever that there are no freedoms and rights won once and for all, Beta reported.

“They must be defended daily, because there are always and everywhere those who are ready to violate them,” said Jankovic, stressing that the modern digital age with new ways of violating human rights has faced institutions with numerous challenges.

“We are prepared for them,” but international cooperation and support are very important in this process, said Jankovic at a meeting with US Ambassador to Serbia Christopher Hill held in Belgrade.

Hill and Jankovic talked about protection against discrimination and promotion of equality, as the values shared by the Serbian and American societies.

Ambassador Hill said that Serbia has made great progress in many areas, including the protection of human rights where some areas are regulated in accordance with the highest democratic standards, especially that of gender equality, said a press release issued by the Commissioner’s office.

The Ambassador and the Commissioner agreed that the preservation and constant improvement of human rights and freedoms is essential for the development of any democratic society, said the press release.
