Two political analysts told N1 that several hundred young Moldovans were recruited by the Wagner group and trained in Serbia and the Republika Srpska (RS) for protests and assaults on strategic targets.

The Moldovan government said that several hundred young people had been identified as part of a large group trained to destabilize the country prior to a referendum on membership in the European Union.

Romanian political analyst Mihai Isac said the men arrested in Kishinev were trained in parts of Serbia close to the border with Romania and in an area near the city of Banjaluka in the RS. “They were trained by Russian officers and some Serbian personnel,” he said.

Moldovan security analyst Andrei Curăraru told N1 that the young people were recruited by Wagner and another group which also belonged to the late Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin. He said both represented Russian interests and were also active in Ukraine. He said that more than 300 people were recruited and 100 went through a form of para-military training in the Balkans and other places to handle explosives and drones.

He said the view of the whole thing in Moldova is that Serbia is being used as a third party which can’t be connected directly to Russia. According to him, the people who were arrested are Serbian nationals who trained the others and led the assault groups.
