Between 17,000 and 18,000 people attended a New Year’s Eve protest march in Belgrade under the slogan “There is No New Year - You Still Owe Us for the Old One,” according to the Archive of Public Gatherings (AoPG).

Heavy fog complicated precise crowd counting, the Archive reported.

“Due to New Year’s Eve fog conditions, materials for individual counting were unavailable. Our attendance estimates for public events (in Belgrade and Novi Sad) are based on area and crowd density assessments made on site," AoPG explained.

“At midnight, protesters gathered for a silent commemoration at Students’ Square (in Belgrade) and surrounding areas covered roughly 10,000 square meters, indicating between 17,000 and 18,000 citizens and students were present,” said the Archive’s final assessment stated.

A concurrent, city-sponsored concert at Belgrade’s Republic Square drew an estimated 5,000 to 6,000 people.
