The Apollo Minerals Ltd company filed for a new permit through its Serbian subsidiary Edelweiss Mineral Exploration whose original permit were issued in 2021 and expired in December 2024. The company drilled for exploration purposes to a depth of 600 meters searching for copper and silver just outside the spa near the Studen spring. The company said in a report that no significant quantities of copper were found.
Opposition councilors in the Nis City Assembly demanded an end to the drilling fearing pollution of one of the main water sources supplying the city.
Sources at the Mining and Energy Ministry confirmed that a request was filed to renew the permit.
