Belgrade pro-government daily Vecernje Novosti said on Tuesday that President Aleksandar Vucic will go to the Serbian Orthodox Church monastery on Mt Athos in Greece for Christmas.

The Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) marks time based on the Julian calendar and celebrates Christmas on January 7.

Vucic confirmed plans for the visit on Tuesday during a visit to a farm in the village of Lacarak north of Belgrade.

The daily said that this will be the first official visit to the Hilandar Monastery in the past 20 years. The monastery was founded in the 12th century by then Serbian ruler Stefan Nemanja and his son St Sava.

Vucic is scheduled to have Christmas eve supper with the monastery brotherhood, attend overnight Christmas services and see the relics in the Hilandar treasury. He will also meet with Abbot Metodije to discuss the restoration of the monastery which was heavily damaged by fire in 2004. Vecernje Novosti quoted unnamed sources who claimed that Vucic expressed readiness to increase the funding of the restoration work. It added that the Serbian President did not ask for any special treatment during the visit.

Vucic’s predecessor Tomislav Nikolic made several private visits to Hilandar as did Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica in 2006.
