Belgrade Mayor Aleksandar Sapic said on Thursday that he supports the students who have been protesting to demand accountability for the deaths of 15 people at Novi Sad Railway Station.

Sapic has not been seen in public for weeks.

“I absolutely support the students,” he told a news conference in Belgrade City Hall adding that he can’t believe that there is anyone who doesn’t want the events at Novi Sad Railway Station cleared up. You can’t fight for truth and justice and respect for the constitution and law by breaking them, he added. “If you want to get institutions to decide, for everyone to take responsibility, a normal democratic state of law, you can’t fight it by breaking the law and constitution and I don’t think people who do that deserve support,” he said.
