Police officers have been deployed in front of the mural of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic in central Belgrade on Tuesday which was scheduled to be removed, and later in the day, plainclothes police officers arrested Aida Corovic, a human rights activist, for smashing eggs at the mural, the FoNet news agency reported, citing another activist.

The Youth Initiative for Human Rights (YIHR) called for the removal of the mural painted on the side of an apartment building last week. Still, the gathering was banned by the police citing possible clashes between Mladic supporters and YIHR activists.

Plainclothes police officers arrested later on Tuesday Aida Corovic, a human rights activist, for smashing eggs at the mural, the FoNet news agency reported, citing another activist.

An N1 journalist said he saw dozens of uniform police officers, at least two police vans, and riot gear placed against a wall.

He added the traffic was closed in the street where the mural was and in neighbouring roads leading to it.

Several NGOs announced they would gather to remove the mural on Tuesday, the International Day Against Fascism and Antisemitism, but Serbia’s police banned the rally.

While plainclothes officers were detaining Corovic, people there called on uniform police to intervene what they ignored.

A FoNet reporter said the plainclothes officers ‘removed’ another woman who threw an egg at the mural.

Corovic is reported to have been taken to a local Vracr police station.

An N1 reporter saw police officers on both sides of the street along with two police vans. An eyewitness said that the police officers were checking the ID of anyone who stopped by the mural. She added that she stopped to talk to a neighbour and was approached by a police officer who wrote up her details. The woman said that she saw police officers stopping two young men in front of the mural.
