Belgrade University economics Professor Ljubodrag Savic told N1 that the Serbian government does not have the money for a new aid package to help the economy deal with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

“There wasn’t even any money for the first package,” he said adding that the high fiscal deficit proves that claim. “Evidently the money which was pumped into the economy was from a new debt. The state should focus on the people who are facing economic hardships, not on the people who can be expected to survive economically which means that it should absolutely reduce the number of people to get the new aid package. It should focus on measure which will be equally distributed, meaning that the economic recovery should be borne equally by the economy and employers,” he said.

The money that the authorities are planning to earmark for aid to the population should be directed towards the poorest people not eimply to everyone regardless of social status, he said.
