Belgrade-based Beta news agency said it was told by European Commission spokesman Peter Stano that the Kosovo authorities have been asked to explain the decision to ban all currencies but the Euro.
It quoted Stano as saying that the Commission wants Pristina to avoid any steps that could jeopardize the normalization of relations with Belgrade. We are calling both sides to discuss the issue as part of the EU-mediated dialogue, he said and added that the Commission is looking into the possible consequences of the decision.
The Kosovo Central Bank issued a decree on Thursday saying that the only legal currency in Kosovo is the Euro, prompting fierce reactions from officials in Belgrade who said that the decision endangers the livelihood of the Kosovo Serbs, especially pensioners who are paid in Dinars.
