Bill amending Law on Higher Education withdrawn from parliament

The Serbian Government on Friday withdrew from parliamentary procedure the Bill amending the Law on Higher Education, citing the need for “additional consultations on the issues that are subject to this law.”
The bill was met with criticism from experts, particularly regarding provisions related to the operation of foreign universities in Serbia.
“Due to the need for additional consultations, this bill has been withdrawn from parliamentary procedure,” said the Government in a press release.
Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic said Thursday that the Serbian Government decided to withdraw the bill due to “unprecedented pressure and threats from the University leadership,” while Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced on Thursday evening that he may personally propose legislative changes to the Serbian Parliament that would allow foreign universities in the country.
