The Bureau for Social Research (BIRODI) has filed complaints with the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media (REM) against the Serbian state TV (RTS), Pink TV and Prva TV for, as it stated, censoring information about citizen protests against the opening of lithium mines in Serbia.

The organization wrote on its X account that the “complaints have been filed with REM against RTS, Pink TV, and Prva TV for violating Article 4 of the Regulation on the Protection of Human Rights in the Provision of Media Services by censoring information about citizen protests against the opening of lithium mines!”

Protests against lithium and boron mining are being held across Serbia, with protesters sending out the message that they do not want lithium and boron mines in the country.

The protests erupted after the Serbian government adopted a “new” decree on July 16, effectively reviving the contentious 2020 Jadar project decree.

The 2020 decree had previously triggered over two years of mass protests by Serbian citizens, it was repealed by a new one in 2022 halting the Jadar project, which, it turns out, was unconstitutional.

On July 11 the Serbian Constitutional Court overturned the Serbian Government decree halting the Jadar project, and already on July 16 the Government adopted a new decree to restart the project.
