European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell has requested the calling of new local elections in northern Kosovo municipalities.
Borrell wrote on Twitter on Thursday evening that he discussed “the dangerous situation in the north of Kosovo” with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani.
He said he had a joint meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz , as well as bilateral meetings with Vucic and Osmani.
“We have 3 clear requests: – new local elections now, – ensuring the participation of Kosovo Serbs, – start the work to establish the Association of Serbian Majority Municipalities w/in EU-facilitated Dialogue,” Borrell wrote.
“Failure to do so will have serious consequences for our relations,” he added in a post following the meeting with Serbian and Kosovo representatives on the sidelines of the European Political Community summit in Moldova.
Prior to Borrell, French President Macron presented, on behalf of France and Germany, an almost identical initiative.
Macron said Thursday evening in Moldova that Paris and Berlin urge Serbia and Kosovo to immediately organize new local elections in the Serb-majority municipalities in northern Kosovo in which Kosovo Serb representatives would participate.
