Serbian Parliament Speaker warned protesting students on Tuesday the honeymoon is over.

University students across the country have taken over their schools in protest over the lack of accountability for the deaths of 15 people in the collapse of a concrete awning at Novi Sad Railway Station. They have also been staging daily 15 Minutes of Silence protests in memory of the victims of the tragedy, blocking main roads in several cities.

Brnabic told the parliamentary education committee that “the moment is coming to end any chance of setting things straight”. She added that there are 3 threats hanging over the university blockades – the danger of more than 100,000 students losing the right to budget funding and another 17,000 losing their right to student housing; added expenses to students paying for their studies along with “lost life opportunities”; and a possible financial blockade and bankruptcy of all university schools. This was the first time that a parliament committee discussed the student protests.

Opposition MPs at the meeting fiercely criticized Brnabic and her ruling SNS for using the red hand showing the middle finger on social media, banners and as pavement graffiti painted on elementary school grounds.

Students at state universities in Serbia either have the cost of their studies covered from the national budget on a year by year basis depending on their grades or they pay for their studies also on a year by year basis with the possibility of getting back budget funding.

Brnabic’s 40 minute tirade included a repeat of the claim made by other officials that someone from the Croatian capital Zagreb was behind the university blockades, drawing a stormy reaction from the opposition members of the committee who shouted Shame on You at her.
The committee meeting was attended by several university rectors, deans and representatives of the Student Conference of Universities of Serbia which is allegedly closely linked to the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).
