The President of the National Assembly of Serbia, Ana Brnabic, expressed support for lithium mining in Serbia and said she believes that it would be wrong to give up such a chance for the future of the country, adding that she is not the one to decide whether the citizens should vote on the issue in a referendum.

„Lithium is important for Europe, and the only significant lithium deposit on the European continent is in Serbia. If the people of Serbia decide to support lithium mining, regarding which I did not hide my belief that it is good and that it is the oil of the 21st century, it would be abnormal and unwise to give it up. Norway was one of the poorest countries, but it extracted oil from the sea,“ Ana Brnabic told reporters during a tour of the construction site where the renovation of the „Bosko Buha“ Theater is starting.

Asked if this means that there will be a referendum on the exploitation of lithium in the Jadar Valley, Brnabic said:

„We’ll see. My job is to lead a debate in the parliament with the relevant actors, it is not up to me to make a decision whether there will be a referendum“, she said.

She said that everyone who worries about the consequences of such a project should know that the European Union (EU) has the best environmental protection standards and would take care that the project, which is a huge opportunity for Serbia, is implemented in accordance with the best European and world standards.

According to her, the domestic company from Subotica, „Eleven S“, which employs 110 people from 21 countries, managed to make nickel-free lithium batteries, which is a great success for Serbia.

Brnabic said that the initiative could mean that by 2030, investments worth 11-12 billion euros would come to Serbia and 20,000 new jobs could be created.

In response to the statement that Germany also has large reserves of lithium but does not extract it, Brnabic said that she is completely convinced that some European countries would also mine if they completed their research and found a project that is „at least similar to the project in Serbia“.

„If Germany had lithium deposits around Berlin, it would even extract it from around Berlin,“ she argued.
