Serbian Parliament speaker Ana Brnabic said that she will respect the opposition’s decision if it chooses to boycott the Belgrade elections, but that “riots will not be allowed.”

Brnabic told Happy TV that the opposition politicians were vague, and that they “deliberately did not say that they would boycott the elections.”

“I hope they will participate, but if they don’t, that is their political decision. What is unacceptable are riots and preventing other people from voting,” said Brnabic.

The Serbian Parliament speaker on Wednesday called elections for the Belgrade City Assembly for June 2 after talks between the government and the opposition on improving electoral conditions by implementing the ODIHR recommendations failed to produce an agreement.

The Serbia Against Violence (SPN) and NADA opposition coalitions demanded that local elections in the cities and municipalities where voting did not take place in December 2023 be held concurrently with the Belgrade local elections.
