A 182-kilometer long gas interconnector, which will carry gas from Azerbaijan to Greece, was put into operation in Bulgaria on Saturday. In this way the region will get an alternative supply of Russian gas.
During the opening ceremony, which was attended by high-ranking officials from the region, as well as the presidents of Greece, Bulgaria, Romania and Azerbaijan, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic requested the same treatment for Serbia as for EU countries, due to high energy prices.
He congratulated the Bulgarian and Greek leaders and said he regretted that “none of us believed in the importance of this project.”
“This is very important for Serbia because we started the interconnector between Serbia and Bulgaria and it will be completed in a year and I hope that in 2023 at this time we will have a big ceremony in our country,” said Vucic.
He asked the European Commission President to include the Balkan countries in the plans for the EU member member states.
The Greece – Bulgaria gas interconnector connects the natural gas transmission network of Greece near the town of Komotini with the Bulgarian transmission network near the town of Stara Zagora.
At the beginning of this year, Serbia started the construction of a gas interconnector with Bulgaria with the support of the EU. The Nis-Dimitrovgrad interconnector has a length of 109 kilometers on the territory of Serbia and the works are expected to be completed by September 2023.
