The Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) is celebrating Christmas on Tuesday, based on the Julian calendar.

Traditionally SPC clergy and the faithful greet each other saying Christ is Born and replying Truly Born.

Christmas also marks the end of the winter fast which started late in November.

Belgrade’s bakers made their traditional huge bread with 33 gold coins inside it. The bread was broken into some 7,000 pieces and handed out to the crowd gathered in front of the St Sava Temple.

Traditions include not leaving home on Christmas day except for boys and men who visit friends, family and neighbors to be the first person in the home that day, bringing good fortune and happiness. This is also the day to reconcile and resolve arguments. A bread or cake is made with a coin inside it and whoever gets the coin when the bread is broken should have luck for the coming year.
