The Council of Europe (CoE) said on Tuesday that its Secretary General Alain Berset will pay an official visit to Serbia on March 5-6.

"I am coming to Belgrade with a clear message - in moments of political tension, the basics matter most: healthy rule of law, independent institutions and respect for shared European standards and international obligations. These basics are what keep democracies stable and citizens confident in their future. And they are essential for Serbia's European path - and for democratic security on our continent," the press release quoted Berset as saying.

A press release said that Berset will have meetings with President Aleksandar Vucic, Prime Minister Djuro Macut, Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic, Foreign Minister Marko Djuric and Justice Minister Nenad Vujic.

He will also meet with students at Belgrade University’s law school as well as with civil society representatives as part of preparations for the New Democratic Pact for Europe.
