Commissioner Kos says newly adopted judiciary laws are serious setback

“This is a serious setback because those amendments have been adopted in a very rushed, untransparent manner without any consultations,” she said.

The set of laws were submitted by a ruling SNS party MP and are viewed as seriously limiting the work of prosecutors and judges.

Kos called the Serbian parliament “to revise as soon as possible those laws and bring the judiciary laws in line with European standards”. “We still really want Serbia to become part of the European Union and I will not stop working on this,” the commissioner said.

She added that EU candidate countries like Serbia are expected to “behave European”.

“It's interesting to see that there is a new dynamic in the enlargement process. Albania and Montenegro are really advancing fast towards the membership, and Serbia is going in the other direction. So I really don't get it why this is happening, but this is not what we want to see,” she said.
