Court hearing of ruling party activists: All four plead not guilty
At the main hearing in the case against four activists of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) charged with violently assaulting several students in Novi Sad on the night of January 27-28, inflicting serious bodily harm upon them, the defendants took the stand. The court is set to hear from eight witnesses as the trial moves forward.
All four defendants pleaded not guilty.
All four of them also refused to answer questions from the prosecutor, the victims’ lawyers, or the judge.
One defendant, D.R., admitted he was near the Petefi Sandor school when the attack happened but insisted he stayed in the car the entire time.
The others denied being anywhere near the scene that night. They claimed they had left the SNS offices before the incident took place, and one defendant, N.D., said he didn’t even leave his apartment that evening.
Student Ana was also heard as a victim-witness.
Ana identified defendant S.K. (30) as one of the attackers. She stood by the statement she gave to the prosecutor and said she still experiences pain in her teeth and jaw, as well as a weaker and misaligned bite.
All four SNS activists said they voluntarily went to the police after seeing news reports about a red Chevrolet linked to the incident, hoping to clear their names and show they were not involved.
They also claimed that a police officer at the station insulted and threatened them before taking their photos. They said they believe those photos are why they are now facing trial and asked the judge to lift their detention in favor of a less restrictive measure.
