The CRTA democracy watchdog said on Thursday that the state of the Serbian voter registry is worrying.

A press release quoted CRTA Program Director Rasa Nedeljkov as saying that the number of registered voters dropped by more than 40,000 this year.

“The number of registered voters in all of Serbia dropped by 41,110 over the past three and a half months. An average of 400 a day. In comparison, an average of 31 voters were removed from the register in the 20 months between elections in 2022 and 2023,” he said.

CRTA said an added cause for concern is the fact that the drastic drop in voter numbers was registered in just 6 percent of polling stations.

The NGO said that there are three conditions needed to restore the integrity of the election process – accountability for violations of the law on elections, a review of the electoral rolls and raising professional standards in public media.

It warned that the culture of impunity would remain in place unless accountability for crimes committed in the election process are solved.
