Culture Ministry buys Einstein, Maric letters

The Serbian Culture Ministry said on Thursday that it bought letters exchanged between Albert Einstein and his Serbian wife Mileva Maric. Pročitaj više

A press release said that 43 letters signed by Einstein and 10 signed by Maric were bought along with a number of other documents, including a wedding announcement, at a Christie’s auction. The documents were bought in preparation for the 150th anniversary of Maric-Einstein’s birth. According to the Ministry, the initiative to buy the documents came from President Aleksandar Vucic with the support of Prime Minister Milos Vucevic and Finance Minister Sinisa Mali.

The document swill be stored in the Serbian State Archives where a personal collection will be set up.

Mileva Maric Einstein was a mathematician and physicist and Einstein’s first wife and mother of their 2 sons. She published several papers on the theory of relativity and behavior of electrons but was overshadowed by her husband. They divorced in 1919 and she returned to Serbia to teach. She has been recognized as a pioneering female scientist who played an important role in the development of modern physics.
