Serbian outgoing Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic told the 55th Session of the UN Human Rights Council that Belgrade expects the international community to act more decisively against discrimination of the Kosovo Serbs.

“The survival of our people in their centuries-old homes is in danger on the territory of our southern province,” a ministry press release quoted Dacic as saying in reference to Kosovo. Under the Serbian constitution, Kosovo is a province and an integral part of Serbia. Serbian officials refer to it as Kosovo and Metohija, the official name under the constitution which was used for decades.

According to Dacic, more than 200,000 displaced Kosovo Serbs have been waiting to return home for more than 25 years. “More than 14 percent of the remaining Serbs have left Kosovo and Metohija in the past year alone,” he said.

Dacic said that Serbia has taken steps to strengthen rule of law in the field of human rights, especially in regard to refugees, children and the handicapped and to root out racial and religious discrimination.
