Serbian Internal Affairs Minister Ivica Dacic said on Thursday that the person wielding a firearm at a protest in Novi Sad was an army sergeant.

Speaking live on the pro-regime TV Informer, Dacic said that the man in plain clothes was part of a security detail for an official but did not specify who. The man in a black T-shirt pulled out a pistol during a clash between supporters of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and protesters. The two groups were separated by a riot police cordon.

Video of the man with the pistol appeared on social media almost immediately on Wednesday night.

Dacic claimed that Sargeant Vladimir Brkusanin had his service pistol and used it in line with the law. “I am sure that there would have been serious consquences to him and others, perhaps even loss of life, if he hadn’t taken out his service weapon,” the minister said.
