Serbian Internal Affairs Minister Ivica Dacic said that the gathering in Novi Sad was a serious violation of public order, including destruction of public property and assaults on the police.
He said that the rioting included damage to Serbia’s reputation in regard to its flag. Protesters removed a flag which was hung over the windows of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) offices in central Novi Sad before protesters pelted red paint at the windows. President Aleksandar Vucic characterized that as disrespect for the flag by people who hate Serbia.
Dacic said that the police showed restraint and reacted only to repel assaults. “All perpetrators of violence and criminal acts will be arrested and charges will be filed. Everything has been recorded and the perpetrators will answer,” the minister said.
Several N1 reporters in Novi Sad said that a group of masked and aggressive young men vandalized the city hall building and ruling party offices.
